Briefing Session – Thursday 19 June 2014 
9.30am - 12.00pm (followed by lunch)

NAHT is bringing Aspire to the South-West, with a view to a number of schools in Devon and Cornwall joining the programme in September. 
In the South-West, The Learning Institute (TLI), based at Callington Community College, will be running the programme in partnership with NAHT and Edison Learning. 
Nick Appleby, from TLI, will be running a briefing for Devon schools interested in taking part in the Aspire School Improvement Partnership Programme.  The session will also be of interest to individuals who would like to become 'Achievement Advisors' for Aspire across the South-West.

Children in Care Education Progress Data Collection
Devon County Council has issued instructions  for all schools and education settings to provide them with regular progress data for each child in care, to assist work in reversing the trend of a growing gap in attainment between children in care and other pupils.
Primary Data Collection
A reminder that the first statutory data collection submission deadline (Early Years Foundation Stage Profile) is next Thursday 19 June.
Ofsted Assessment of Governance in Devon
Devon Association of Governors (DAG) recently commissioned Dr Carol Woodhouse to prepare a report on Ofsted's assessment of Governance in Devon.  The full report can be viewed on the Devon Association of Governors website.
SEN Matters
Assessment of readiness to meet the SEN reforms
The DfE has recently published research on an assessment of readiness to meet the forthcoming Special Educational Needs and Disability reforms. This includes a review of the initial effectiveness of the pathfinder champions as of October-December 2013.
Safeguarding Matters
DSCB Escalation Procedure

The Independent Chair of Devon Safeguarding Children Board and the Director of People Services have written, for all agencies, a letter about how they might escalate concerns in respect of children and young people, where there are safeguarding issues.
Learning from Serious Case Reviews
Devon Safeguarding Children Board has produced a series of posters highlighting issues from Serious Case Reviews, as a reminder of some of the factors to consider when dealing with safeguarding concerns.
Keeping Children Safe
Babcock LDP has produced a 'Keeping Children Safe' Newsletter.  This newsletter will be sent to all schools and settings in Devon on a half termly basis.

Level 3 Safeguarding Training
Thank you to those Headteachers that provided us with feedback on the quality and content of DSCB Level 3 Safeguarding Training.  Your responses have been fed back ahead of the review of this training.

Devon Youth Service Review
Earlier this year Devon County Council carried out an extensive public consultation regarding a major review of the Devon Youth Service. The results of the consultation were considered and all recommendations were approved at a County Council Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 11 June.

Accessing DAPH Newsletter
Thank you to schools that have continued to report issues accessing our DAPH Update. 
SWGfL has been working with Newzapp to identify the problem and they report that the issue, relating to Newzapp Firewall preventing access from proxy servers, has now been resolved.
