EVENT DETAILS

Hitherto we have been conditioned to see the wine world through red, white and rosé-coloured spectacles; there are, however, other hues and other styles in the spectrum, a whole range of new possibilities. And now a small band of growers across the world are re-examining these norms and exploring a new paradigm. Orange wines (sometimes called amber or even skin contact wines) are the consequence of leaving the grape skins in contact with the juice during the fermentation. It could be described as red wine making using white wine grapes, where the wine derives complex minerality, vinosity and texture from the winemaking process. These wines have excited enormous debate in the wine world.

Many winemakers are enthralled by the possibilities of skin contact winemaking; in countries like Georgia, it is an integral part of an ancient tradition now making a strong return, in other places like Friuli, Slovenia, Croatia, Sicily and Spain one might even make a case for the existence of an orange wine movement, but it is really much more than region-specific, it is to do with extracting the maximum flavour from the grape.

This promises to be a fascinating and most unusual wine tasting.
