Running Deer in Schools 2013 - 2014
Following on from our very successful schools project in 2012/2013 we are offering a new project for schools in Devon for 2013/2014. This Project has been designed with the focus on providing children with special needs and mainstream children the opportunity to interact with each other, improving social understanding, reducing isolation and stigma that can be associated with special needs; helping to improve self-esteem, generate new friendships and understanding between peers. This will be achieved by taking our Bushcraft team into schools and working with small mixed groups of children both with and without additional needs in the outdoor environment. Read more....

School Leadership Support Service Update
The SLSS team said a formal 'goodbye' to Tracey Hart at the end of the summer term. Tracey was unable to return to work on the grounds of ill health and so the service which Tracey was instrumental in establishing and so passionate about supporting, moves forward without her, but with her blessing.
The service is working with a team of six mentor headteachers, four who are current serving heads, and two former headteachers who are able to offer more capacity to respond at short notice. In addition to offering a telephone and email confidential contact, the service is also developing its 'Headstrong' training exploring the issues for governors of ensuring a healthy work-life balance for headteachers. The mentor heads have also been pro-actively making contacting with all primary heads in Devon for an initial conversation. SLSS attended the DAPH conference and will be at the DAPH Autumn Briefing event at Sandy Park on 7th November.

Safeguarding Matters
Keeping Devon's children safe new chair for Safeguarding Improvement Board
The children's Safeguarding Improvement Board (SIB) this week welcomed a new independent Chair, Professor Ray Jones. He will spend two days each month in Devon meeting frontline workers, both from the County Council and a range of agencies and partners, to gain a true picture of what life is like for them. He will also spend time with County Council senior officers, managers and Members to find out what's happening from their perspective.
Read how Professor Jones will take an independent view on child protection in Devon.
DAPH Representation on the Safeguarding Improvement Board
To date Education has been represented on the Children's Safeguarding and Improvement Board by Faith Jarrett, The Kings School but at the last Board meeting Professor Ray Jones, the new independent chair, asked that an invitation be extended to DAPH to nominate a Primary Headteacher to join the Board as it is recognised that primary schools have an important role to play which warranted direct representation. We are grateful to Jan Reid, DAPH Executive Committee member and headteacher at Yeo Valley will assume this role.

MASH Template Letters
Following a recent meeting with a number of local doctors and Felicity Baldwin who now heads MASH, concerns were expressed over the follow up from MASH and ongoing communication following a referral.
Felicity has assured us that there are now standard template letters and they would ALWAYS be sent. She would like to hear if they are not received. Copies of the MASH template letters are available here and they also contain phone numbers as a point of contact if schools are not happy with procedural practice.
Contact: Felicity Baldwin by e-mail please also copy in the DAPH Office to any correspondence in connection with non receipt of template letters.
Early Help Strategy and Devon Threshold Tool
The new Devon Threshold Tool has been approved by the Devon Safeguarding Children Board (DSCB) and is now ready for use by multi-agency practitioners. The draft Early Help Strategy was endorsed by the DSCB and will be further updated following a consultation with children and families. DSCB would welcome your feedback on the Strategy. Please send any comments by e-mail to the DAPH Office by Friday 25 October and we will collate and submit responses to be taken into account in the final Strategy.
Model Safeguarding Policy Updated October 2013
Safeguarding Protocol and updated Safeguarding Handbook
The Babcock LDP Child Protection/Safeguarding Handbook has been comprehensively updated and is now available in electronic format. It tells you all you need to know about the policies and practice in Devon on a whole range of child protection and safeguarding issues. It really is the Designated Officers bible.
Babcock LDP has also produced a Safeguarding Protocol document for schools clearly setting out your legal responsibilities and best practice across a whole range of safeguarding activities. It will help every school ensure that it is meeting statutory requirements and going beyond the basic minimum. Compiled with the assistance of a group of Devon Headteachers this is a user friendly guide to safeguarding practice in schools.
The Safeguarding Protocol together with the updated Safeguarding Handbook is available to schools who have subscribed via the Babcock LDP Moodle.
Contact: Jane Lake, Education Safeguarding Officer by e-mail or telephone 01392 8807290.
