Running Deer in Schools 2013 - 2014

Following on from our very successful schools project in 2012/2013 we are offering a new project for schools in Devon for 2013/2014.

This Project has been designed with the focus on providing  children with special needs and mainstream children the opportunity to interact with each other, improving social understanding, reducing isolation and stigma that can be associated with special needs; helping to improve self-esteem, generate new friendships and understanding between peers.

This will be achieved by taking our Bushcraft team into schools and working with small mixed groups of children both with and without additional needs in the outdoor environment. Read more....

School Based Research Project - Closing the Gap: Tackling the Impact of Social Deprivation on Learning

A pupil premium intervention project for teachers working to develop pupils' understanding of their own learning.

This project is based on Sutton Trust research into low cost, high impact interventions for pupils from a disadvantaged background.  This research indicates the value of focusing on feedback and meta-cognition.  The study is based on the hypothesis that pupils who under-perform in literacy in primary school, and who suffer a further drop performance on transition to secondary share certain characteristics which include limitations in their ability to direct their own improvement.  Read more .....

Applications are now invited to participate in this Research Project which will commence early in the Spring 2014 term.

Model Safeguarding Policy Updated October 2013

Last week we included links to the recently revised and updated Whole School Model Child Protection Policy and Procedures available for all schools on the Babcock LDP website.

Within this Model Policy (under Section 15), references are made to a number of other related safeguarding portfolio policies for example: Behaviour Principles, Written Policy on Behaviour Principles and School Behaviour

For the sake of clarification, the statutory policy list is taken directly from the DfE document Policies and Other Documents that Governing Bodies are Required to Have by Law

Some of the policy titles have changed and it is quite probable that schools will have policies that cover the same thing but under another name. The above link will provide policy descriptors.

It is best practice in some schools for governing bodies to amend relevant policy titles at next review so that they are in line with the DfE list and cross reference with the updated Model Safeguarding Policy. This will also enable Ofsted to check against them more easily and also give peace of mind that the school has the statutory policies in place.

Contact: Jane Lake, Education Safeguarding Officer by e-mail or telephone 01392 8807290.

Reducing exclusions to zero.
Is it possible? What would need to be in place?

There is to be a "one off" forum on Tuesday 19th November 2.00pm - 4.00pm at an Exeter venue (to be confirmed). This is being organised under the umbrella of the Primary Support Partnership Initiative as an issue raised during discussions. It would be very valuable to have several heads present. Attendance does not imply any ongoing commitment.

If you would like to attend or have any questions please e-mail David Glenny at davidbglenny@gmail.com or Liz Deane at lizdeane@devon.gov.uk.

New FREE CPD - "Year of School Leadership"

Kelly Newland, Leading Education has developed this concept to enable school leaders to receive each week a short inspirational insight drawn from a range of sources including leadership theory, literature, nature, news and experiences from everyday life.

Alongside this there will be points for personal reflection and action, with space for comments to share insights and encourage other participants in the Year of School Leadership.

Successful leadership comes from reflective thinking and this experience provides a framework for both personal and professional development - it is an ideal resource to use within dedicated leadership time.
